Twitter Ready for Main-Stream Competition?
Twitter is a great service. The microblogging platform is already the fastest media when it comes to technology and Silicon Valley related news. Twitter is proving to be more and more useful all the time.
It’s a shame Jaiku wasn’t able to keep its front runner position after being bought by Google. Jaiku is the very reason why Twitter hasn’t gotten picked up here in Finland at all, but Worldwide Twitter has close to 900k users (according to TwitDir) and has evolved to become the better service. So what are people tweeting about?
One good tool that’s trying to create some structure to the public tweets is Twemes. It organizes tweets according to global tags. It helps to follow topics, not just people, which is nevertheless the best thing about Twitter.
Some search tools for twitter include: TwitterLinkr, TerraMinds Twitter Search and TwitterMeter. Some interesting facts (like this one about the 4 types of Twitter users) about Twitter can be found at Twitterfacts (of course!).
Microblogging is mainstream
Microblogging is something that many people are doing without realizing it through the Facebook (and other social media sites) status updates. It is really the same thing. The difference is that it’s Twitters core and they have built a platform for one specific thing.
I see that microblogging will continue to proliferate as more people get more accustomed to letting other people know what they are up to at any given moment. Twitter has had a great start, but they face a lot of challenge from Facebook. I hope they will keep up the good work until they are bought and doomed to fade out of extinction, like Jaiku.
