The Next Web – Day 2 Wrap-up

The Next Web Conference - logoThe Day 2 of The Next Web was in some ways even better than yesterday. )And I was better prepared to take notes.)

Tech geek blogger-star Robert Scoble started the day by talking about the new digital divide : The friend divide. This means that the user experiences of a user of social services with 2 friends is a lot different to that of a user with 200 friends. That means that online services should do more to get the people who’ve just joined any new service involved and aware of the possibilities of the service. Otherwise they will in many cases get disappointed.

Scoble also made a good point that the input into our lives is what makes us better not the output. So It’s better to follow many than to have many followers (in Twitter or elsewhere).

CTO  and VP of Amazon Werner Vogels talked about the theme ”uncertainty”. We are moving ftoma push-model into a pull-model. The push model of doing business: design > deploy > execute > monitor > refine > design > etc. The pull-model find > connect > innovate > reflect > find > etc.  The pull model has made them realize the importance of resources.Resources should be acquire on-demand and they must be released when no longer neededn.

Drivers of uncertainty are abundance of competition, focus on learning and the rising power of the consumer. to fight this uncertainty companies must let go of control and innovate in what they are best at. They should concentrate their efforts in what adds most value.

StumbleUpon’s founder Garret Camp’s topic was the future of search and discovery. Search is good only when you know what you are looking for, otherwise discovery is the way to find relevant content.

Jessica Mah is a 17-year old serial entrepreneur and blogger and it was her job to tell the audience what the future of the web will look like. The future of the web is about you (and me). It’s about relevant content delivered when and how I want it in a personalized manner.

Chris Saad, Co-Founder and Chairperson at DataPortability.org and CEO of Faraday Media talked with Khris Loux abot Data Portability. They discussed one of the main topics of the Conference: openness and relevancy of data and that the user has the control of their own data and content.. DataPortability is an experiment of complete transparency where everyone can contribute.

We also had the chance to see the world-premiere of a documentary called “The Truth about Wikipedia”, which questions the way wikipedia is being built by amateurs.

The day ended with TheNextWeb Awards, the winners are here.

I’ll wrap up the whole conference with comments from Finnish participants when I get back home. Now to the party.
