Finnish Companies Using Twitter

Twitter logo

Paul Dunay wrote a good post on brands that use Twitter. The list is not that long yet, but I recon it’s growing steadily. The list got me thinking again about how many Finnish companies use twitter.

Again, there is no easy way to find them,  even though I used several tools in the process, e.g. TwitDir (no longer functional), Twitter Grader and Twitter’s own search.

Below is a list of my findings, which is relatively short, but should be quite accurate. Most of the companies are startups, which is not surprising. Even many of these companies do not really use Twitter. There is a lot of work to be done to better utilize the great service.

I have only included companies that tweet. There are of course a lot of people in other companies that use it for business purposes, but they

Two finnish  IT news sites use it just for posting their news automatically:

  • Macmaa http://twitter.com/macmaa Apple-uutiset, testit ja vinkit – Apple news and tests
  • tietokone http://twitter.com/tietokone Tietoteknlogian asiantuntija

There clearly is a lot of room for more Finnish companies on Twitter. So sign up and follow me: twitter.com/startupbin. I’ll be happy to help you yo get started using Twitter.

If you other finnish companies using Twitter, please tell in the comments.

Thanks for this – interesting, but surprisingly scarse list.

A comment from behalf of the “corporate individuals” – being Twitter users from earliest since late ’06, we’ve made a conscious decision to present ourselves as not as corporate entity but as open and transparent as possible, eg. as individuals such as myself @samin, @teppo and @vesterinen. I suspect this is the case for few other smaller consultancies as well

I see the advantage of tweeting for a more “traditional”/closed companies, but not necessarily for ourselves. This might as well change over time but this is how we feel at the moment :)

In any case, it’s great to see more and more brands starting to “get” the social media as well. Looking forward on the first tweeting brick & mortar entities…

Two more websites pushing news to Twitter:

Pelit, http://twitter.com/pelit (from http://www.pelit.fi, website of the biggest Finnish gaming magazine; gaming news)
Mbnet, http://twitter.com/mbnet (from http://www.mbnet.fi, website of the biggest Finnish computer magazine; product news and other stuff)

Both are from Sanoma Magazines Finland, wich is my employer.

Sami, I fully understand your approach of presenting yourselves as individual professionals. But I believe in the future there will be more companies using Twitter. Already many startups (not from Finland, though) are using Twitter as a customer service too. More established companies will definitely follow.

Also, I know for a fact that there are some brands from Finland coming to Twitter soon…

Kari, I feel that Sanoma Magazines have not yet fully embraced Twitter’s possibilities. It’s a lot more than another place to automatically push you rss-feed.

Absolutely. Twitter – or any other tool capable of opening up companies is and will be more and more essential to both large and small businesses. That’s what I meant with brick&mortar – for example I’m waiting the first deli owner in Helsingi to realize the power of tweets as a medium.

I agree on the customer service angle as well. If our company would have a service or a product, it would definitely have a twitter account. As a matter of fact, one of the most awesome twitterers so far is definitely @MarsPhoenix.

One thing I’m bit cautious about is having Twitter account for a large, semi-anonymous corporate entity. It takes a whole lot more than just messating 140 chars at a time to build a real dialogue. And this is something large corporations have difficulties already, not just microblogging but far larger level.

And then there’s http://twitter.com/puotipuksu (a tiny web shop). We used twitter for Santa’s blurps during Xmas. Kinda like http://www.mytinyjesus.com/ :) We’ll prolly come back with another talking twitterized head later this year.

Well to be honest behalf of Fruugo we haven’t been that active yet on public Twitter feed due our stealth mode. Thanks for noticing in any case and I’ll promise that we’ll be more active on tweeting as well during our beta phases.

We just recently started using Twitter for the Eat.fi restaurant site. I set up this separate “company” Twitter account so that the people who really don’t care about my personal thoughts, but like Eat.fi, can get their Eat.fi-related updates in one clean, uncluttered stream: http://twitter.com/eatfi

I don’t think this is about being “traditional”, but about rather not forcing our users to be inundated with tweets they don’t want. If they want to follow us as individuals, they can do so separately. Information AND transparency–win-win!

Hei,

first congratulations on the interesting blog! My opinion on Twitter and not seeing it that much in Finnish companies is simple: They don’t buy into each “hype” quickly.

Trying to convince my ex-boss to to embrace radical transparency and to write a blog didn’t succeed, and I believe that it will take a while till companies take it up – the same goes for Twitter. Companies don’t know it, and thus are skeptical, maybe even see it as a waste of time.

As I am starting my own company, I am not yet sure if I should use Twitter – I don’t see the benefits in it (yet!). Although I am curious to hear why you think it would be useful for Finnish companies to use this new technology, so please, enlighten me!

I can definitely see the advantages on tweeting if you’re a consumer product company/specilist organisation. I would really like it if my corner shop would keep me updated on their latest offers, or if my regular bar would tweet about their upcoming events. The possibilities are never-ending!

As for multinationals, I agree with Sami who said that micro-blogging is much more of a challenge. I suppose it is a matter of corporate identity.

We are a resource for Web designers, developers, and everyone else who needs to design or develop Web interfaces. We joined Twitter few months ago, but started actually using it only few weeks ago, after we had created a “strategy” for using it.

We’ve found it a really useful tool, especially for getting feedback on our service, and providing news and updates. Also, after we started using Twitter, our Web site traffic has almost doubled, so it seems it is quite powerful tool in promoting too ;)

Severa is a Finnish project management SaaS provider.

We have been using Twitter at Severa for the past few months. We have used it primarily for lead gen – especially bringing in relevant traffic to our website. We have also used it for PR itches, branding and recently trying it for CRM. Here is our Twitter account http://twitter.com/severa_psa.

In the last 2 weeks, we were able to get more than 7,000 followers. We are trying many different things, including a free beach ball offer. More about it here http://www.targetinfolabs.com/?p=314
