Finnish Startups: You’re (I’m) Not Alone

This post was long overdue. When I started this blog about six months ago, it was quite hard to find information and contacts from Finnish web startups and I foolishly felt that I was quite alone in my interest. The situation was not that bad before but it has improved quite a lot during this time. Nevertheless, more could be done.

Top 5 Startup Blogs

Here is my very subjective view on the current top 5 best blogs about startups in no particular order:

  1. FoundRead, which is part of technology blog network GigaOm, gives good tips and lessons for startups.
  2. Mashable features news especially on social networking and has great lists such as SOCIAL NETWORKING GOD: 350+ Social Networking Sites.
  3. blog.pmarca.com by Marc Andreessen, former co-founder of Netscape, now the co-founder of free social networking platform Ning, offers good advice for startups, that are definitely based on very extensive experience.
  4. How to Change the World by Guy Kawasaki, a Silicon Valley VC and author, has good advice for startups from an investor’s perspective.
  5. And no list about startup blogs can be complete without Techcrunch. It was started 2005 by Michael Arrington and now boasts 2.5M unique visitors per month. Techcrunch has usually well informed news about new web products and services. It has become the archetype of startup blogs both in good and bad.

Compete Blog Tells How People Behave Online

The Compete blog is my new favorite blog. I’ve learned quite a lot on user behavior online after I discovered it a few days ago. Which big search engine is most efficient and why people fill in complete URLs into the search boxes instead of the address bar have made me think about the user differences between search engines. (The answers to both questions can be found in the enlightening comments.)

Also worth reading are what were the biggest sites in 2001 and how are they doing now and an anatomy of a web meme.
