Plentyoffish: 1-Man Company a Huge Success

What a great example for someone like me who’s thinking about starting a web business. Plentyoffish is currently the 2nd biggest dating site in the U.S. and it’s run by one man (and his girlfriend and one customer service rep). Anyway a great inspiration for everyone. Really shows the value of a great idea. Although visually not the most professional looking site, but its easy to use, and what’s even better, totally free. The site generates revenue through clever use of advertising and affiliate programs.

Blogging is a Business Model

This piece about TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington made me realize that blogging can really be considered a separate business model aside “traditional” news or content publishing. You have low costs due to the fact that you can use off the shelf freeware in comparison to more robust content management systems that traditional publishers use. It is very easy to setup a blog and the only real cost comes from the time taken to write your content and nurture your audience by replying to their comments.

What really sets blogging apart as a business model is the commenting on posts. This is real, direct, interaction between the publisher and the audience. Also you do you marketing by commenting on other people’s blogs and by entering into conversation between blogs.

Ponoko: Personal Manufacturing Made Easy

Ponoko is a great new service from a company of the same name that makes personal manufacturing easy for (almost) anyone. It was one of the companies presented at Techcrunch40. You download their templates in .eps format, create your design, upload the file to the site and they will cut your chosen material into the form you wanted. I’ll have to give it a go and see if I can finally start desinging my own furniture. The site also makes it possible to sell the stuff you’ve designed, so maybe that could be the way to my own company….
